ACM Europe Council

The ACM Europe Council was created by ACM to recognize and support European ACM members and activities.

About the ACM Europe Council

The ACM Europe Council aims to increase the level and visibility of ACM activities across Europe. The Council is comprised of European computer scientists committed to fostering the visibility and relevance of ACM in Europe, and is focused on a wide range of European ACM activities, from high-quality ACM conferences in Europe, to expanding ACM chapters, to encouraging greater participation of Europeans in all dimensions of ACM.

Goals

  • Join with other computing and scientific organizations in Europe to offer new programs and activities
  • Encourage nominations of ACM European members for the advanced member grades of Senior Member, Distinguished Member, and Fellow
  • Work with ACM SIGs to increase the number of ACM conferences in Europe
  • Increase the number of ACM chapters and level of chapter activity in Europe

Impact of ETPC Recommendations on the EU’s AI Code of Practice

At the invitation of the European Commission, the ACM Europe Technology Policy Committee (ETPC) submitted a number of recommendations towards the development of a General-Purpose AI Code of Practice (GPAI). The GPAI is intended to help industry comply with the AI Act legal obligations on safety, transparency and copyright of general-purpose AI models. We are proud to announce that several of those recommendations have now been incorporated into the GPAI.

European Informatics Retention and Graduation Rate Report

European higher education is as diverse as the continent’s cultures and traditions. This also means that making analyses and meaningful comparisons can be complex. The area of Informatics is no exception. This report presents the first pan-European analysis of student retention and graduation rates in bachelor-level Informatics programmes. Conducted jointly by Informatics Europe and ACM Europe, it draws on the Informatics Europe Higher Education (IEHE) Data Portal and examines trends across thirteen European countries over the period 2010 to 2023.

ACM Europe TPC Recommendations on Greener Data Centers

Europe TPC submitted a policy brief to the European Commission outlining five recommendations to strengthen sustainability requirements for data centers. Its key point was that current EU legislation lacks binding efficiency targets and comprehensive reporting obligations. The brief calls for enforceable standards on energy and water usage, broader facility coverage, enhanced transparency, and long-term planning to manage AI-related demand growth.
