Thank you for your interest in the 2025 ACM Summer School! The 2025 program focused on High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and explored emerging research areas such as Quantum Computing. The “HPC Computer Architectures for AI and Dedicated Applications,” took place from 21-25 July in Barcelona, Spain, hosted by The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, and ACM Europe, along with industrial sponsors (Huawei, Intel+Lenovo, and Fsas Technologies) were the main sponsors of the school.

The summer school addressed young computer science researchers and engineers and was open to outstanding MSc students. 60 accepted participants spent one week in Barcelona, attending formal lectures, invited talks, and networking activities. The school had a practical hands-on approach with interactive exercises.

The school covered accommodation expenses in shared rooms and full catering for the duration of the school. Travel expenses were covered by the selected participants with a limited number of travel grants available for especially meritorious applicants.

Prof Michela Taufer (University of Tennessee) and Dr Rosa Badia (BSC & UPC) started the ACM School with an introduction to HPC parallel programming techniques and Workflows for HPC & AI. On Day two, Prof Josep Lluís Berral (BSC & UPC) gave a lecture on distributed data analytics, while Dr Javier Aula Blasco (BSC) and Ms Júlia Falcao (BSC) covered Building and Evolving a Multilingual LLM. On Day three, students met the scientists at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, followed by a guided tour of the MareNostrum5 Supercomputer and the newly inaugurated Quantum systems, as well as a social activity in the afternoon. The fourth day was dedicated to HPC and AI processor design, with lectures by Prof Andrea Bartolini (University of Bologna) on sustainable generative AI and HPC systems and Mr. Pablo Vizcaino (BSC), Mr. Ivan Vargas Valdivieso (BSC, UPC), and Mr. Carlos Rojas on RISC-V ISA design and implementation. Day five featured a workshop on Quantum Computing, an industry track, and an invited talk by Prof Luca Benini (University of Bologna and ETHZ). BSC’s Director, Prof Mateo Valero, concluded the school with a final keynote.

Attendees received a certificate and complimentary ACM student membership upon successful school completion. The one-year complimentary membership includes electronic subscriptions to Communications of the ACM, ACM’s flagship magazine, and XRDS, ACM’s magazine written and edited by students for students. Students also received access to online books, videos and courses from leading provider Skillsoft on today’s most sought-after job skills and much more.

The general chair of the school was Prof. Mateo Valero, Director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). Dr. Fabrizio Gagliardi (ACM and BSC) and Prof. Antonio Rubio (BSC and UPC) were the school's directors and led the local organising committee with Dr. Teresa Cervero (BSC), Ms. Tamara Kovazh (BSC), and Ms. Yaroslava Trubenok (BSC) and supported by four former ACM School students (Prof. Worawan Carvalho, Dr. Regina Yasmin, Ass. Prof. Renebeth Bartolini and Mr. Andria Arisal).
